Originally incorporated in 1903, our cemetery was known as the Morristown Hebrew Cemetery Association until 1927 when the name was changed to Beth Israel Cemetery Association. It has always been governed by a ten-member volunteer Board of Trustees. In 1927 those Trustees were elected by the Morristown Lodge of Independent Order Brith Abraham #375 (IOBA 375) and by the House of Israel. An Associate Trusteeship was established for women to serve. The women took charge of charity work such as raising money “for erecting headstones for the non-affording”. Women could attend meetings, express opinions, but not vote.

Times have changed but the cemetery is still run by a Board of Trustees. Now the Board is made up of representatives from the Morristown Jewish Center – Beit Yisrael and Temple B’nai Or of Morristown. The cemetery also serves Congregation B’nai Israel of Basking Ridge. Women can and do serve on the Board as voting members. Now as in the past, the mission of the Beth Israel Cemetery Association is to serve our Jewish community in their time of need.

The ten-acre cemetery, located on Ridgedale Avenue is divided into three sections; Old, New and Southern. The Old Section was begun in 1903. It has standing monuments and raised markers. The New Section was begun as a memorial park in the 1960s with markers that were flush to the ground.  Beginning in 2006, raised markers have been allowed in the New Section. The Southern Section is separated from the main area by the driveway and is used for burials of families of mixed faith.
